President's Message
Hola FCHCC Members and Supporters: It's a great time to be part of the First Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce! 2015 has been a great foundational year and we are well positioned for the future. We will end the year with a bang with our final event of the year on December 10th with our Lieutenant Governor, Carlos Lopez-Cantera, who will be our guest speaker at the December Business Luncheon. If you haven't registered, click here now while we still have some seats left. The Annual Board Strategic Retreat took place at the facilities of our valued member Museum of Science and History (MOSH). Our Board was joined by community advisors, prospective Board Members, and later joined by our families who stayed to visit MOSH's great exhibits. During that retreat, we had strategic discussions and developed some great plans to position the Chamber for future growth. Many thanks to the advisory group who helped us with the strategy by giving of their time and expertise! We look forward to sharing more with you in the coming months! Election ballots will be sent shortly to our members in order to vote for the 2016 Board of Directors so be on the lookout for that and let your voice be heard through your vote. As you gather with your families during the holidays, please remember those less fortunate and find a way to be a blessing to others. I wish you Feliz Navidad y Prospero Año Nuevo! BBVA in Spain History and Beginning BBVA's story starts in 1857 when the Spanish Board of Trade sponsored the creation of Banco de Bilbao as a currency-issuing and discount bank. This was a pioneer initiative driven by economic growth in the region. Until the 1890s it was practically the only bank in that part of Spain. In 1872, the law passed on December 2 created Banco Hipotecario (BHE) with the aim of granting long-term loans for property. In the second half of the 19th century Banco de Bilbao played a leading role in operations involving infrastructure projects and development of the steel industry. In 1878 it lost the right to issue currency and reorganized as a lending and discount bank.
Banco de Vizcaya was set up in 1901. It carried out its first operations in Bilbao and gradually spread throughout the country. Apart from its activities as a commercial and general purpose bank, it intervened in the creation and development of a large part of the Spanish industrial sector. In 1902, Banco de Bilbao merged with Banco del Comercio, although both continued to operate as separate entities. In 1909, Caja Postal was set up as a public entity and started operations in 1916, with the issuing and administration of savings books. A consortium of bankers and manufacturers founded Banco de Crédito Industrial (BCI) in 1920 with the express aim of boosting the installation and consolidation of industry through long-term lending. Both Banco de Bilbao and Banco de Vizcaya formed part of this consortium.
In 1923, the Servicio Nacional de Crédito Agrícola was created under the ministry of agriculture to provide loans to agricultural associations against the joint and several liability of their members. A combination of public and private interests set up Banco de Crédito Local (BCL) in 1925 in the form of a joint-stock company. Its purpose was to finance local authorities and other state institutions. In 1929, Banco Exterior (BEX) was created to encourage foreign trade, to seek new markets for Spanish products and to help local companies with imports and exports.
